Back to Basics: Real Food vs. UPF I The Tuck Company
Hollie RussellShare
If you’ve felt like you need a PhD in chemistry just to buy a box of snacks lately, you aren't alone.
Between the school gate chats and the headlines in the news, there is a lot of noise right now about Ultra-Processed Foods (UPFs). As parents, it can feel like just another thing to feel guilty about. But at The Tuck Company, we’re all about ditching the guilt and getting back to basics.
Let’s break down what UPF actually means for your child’s lunchbox, and how 'Real Food' can be your secret weapon for a smoother school week.
What exactly is a UPF?
In the simplest terms, Ultra-Processed Foods are products made mostly from substances extracted from foods (like fats, starches and added sugars) and additives you wouldn't find in a normal home kitchen.
Think of it this way:
- Real Food: A Pear
- Processed Food: Pear slices in a tin with a little syrup
- Ultra Processed Food: An "apple-flavoured" fruit string with five types of sugar, emulsifiers to keep it bendy, and "natural" flavourings to make it taste like fruit again

Why the 'Real Food' switch is a game-changer
We know that kids aged 4+ have a massive amount of energy. They are growing, learning, and let's be honest - occasionally having meltdowns. Real food changes the way they experience their day:
1. No more 'Sugar Rollercoaster' UPFs are often designed to break down quickly in the body. This leads to a massive spike in energy followed by the dreaded 3pm crash. Real food (like the oats and fruit in our bars) contains fibre. Fibre acts like a 'slow release' tap, giving your child steady energy from the morning bell until they get home.
2. Protecting the 'Gut Bugs' Research is showing more and more that the additives used in UPFs (like emulsifiers) can be tough on little tummies. Real food feeds the good bacteria in their gut, supporting their immune system - essential for surviving 'bug season' at school!
3. Developing Real Tastes UPFs are often engineered to be 'hyper-palatable' (basically, they're designed to be addictive). By sticking to real ingredients, we help kids appreciate the actual taste of a blueberry or apple, setting them up for a lifetime of healthy eating.
How to spot a "Real" snack in 30 seconds
Next time you’re in the snack aisle, try the 'Kitchen Cupboard Test':
Look at the back of the pack. If you see ingredients like maltodextrin, xanthan gum, lecithin, or invert sugar syrup, that’s a UPF red flag. If the list looks like a recipe you could make at home, you’re on the right track.
Making it easy (because life is busy enough)
We didn't start The Tuck Company to give parents more work. We started it because we wanted a 'grab-and-go' option that was as close to homemade as possible.
Our oat bars are:
-
100% Real Food: No nasties, no fillers
-
UK School-Safe: No nuts, no dairy, no gluten
-
Parent-Founded: We’re right there in the school run trenches with you
Taking snacks off your 'to-do' list shouldn't mean compromising on quality. It’s about getting back to basics so your kids can get back to being kids.
